Rajinikanth from Tamil cinema is believed to be the most popular Indian film star in Japan. He came in to popularity with the release of his film "Muthu" in Japan in 1998 which ran for 23 weeks, collected ~208 million Japanese yen and gained an audience of 127,445 people. Rajinikanth became popular with the name, "odoru maharaja", meaning "dancing maharaja", because film was released with the name "mouth, odoru maharaja".
