Situation does not seem to calm down in Japan. And it could be the story across world where newer regions being added to infected list and number of people keeps increasing. This blog and video try to discuss last weeks developments in a Japanese perspective.
Looming recession or an economical slow-down is one thing about which Japanese people are worried. Lot of production plants of Japanese companies are situated in China. Closure of such plants, due to coronavirus, is affecting business of automotive companies like Toyota and Nissan. Many other Japanese companies are dependent on Chinese parts to make their product. Such companies are also getting affected because part makers in China are closing down, may be temporarily, for the same reason of coronavirus.
Another important sector affected by the coronavirus is tourism. One of the biggest seasons in Japan, Sakura or Cherry Blossom is coming up. But Japan cannot welcome Chinese tourists who makes 30% of the tourists due to coronavirus problem. Japan already reported its first bankruptcy case of a Hotel in Aichi Ken due to the cancellation of Chinese tourists. This incident is giving a clear sign of the impact that coronavirus is making on Japanese Economy.
Japanese travelers will also avoid all kind of travels, events and tourism out of corona fear which will make things worse for businesses across the country. And this damage is not going to be confined in Japan. This is going to affect the entire world. As Japan is dependent on China, Europe and Americas are also dependent on China for many of their productions.
Another important problem that many Japanese people face is their lack of confidence in their country's Leadership. Shinzo Abe's popularity is degrading recently due to many reasons. His Economic policy, called Abenomics, did not succeed as expected. Many people are not happy about the timing of immigration policy changes that Abe san brought in to resolve the resource issues in the country. Abe san`s appeal for a constitutional change was also not passed.
Abe san was criticized for his slow response to coronavirus issue and especially about his handling of cruise ship, Diamond Princess, where there were a lot of infected people. Also, many people thought his abrupt decision to close all schools, were not a well planned move.
One serious issue that's happening in Japan as well as in other parts of the world, is anti-chinese sentiments and related fake news like Chinese terrorists trying to spread coronavirus. People started responding to such baseless news by banning Chinese people from their shops and places. This is a serious issue when 30% of foreign workers in Japan are from China. Things could be similar in other countries as well.
While all these problems are happening, Tokyo Catholic Church have suspended public Holy mass. Saudi Arabia once suspended Umrah and might think to cancel Hajj. Even man-made Gods are showing weakness against coronavirus. But still in Delhi, India, people killed their fellow beings to please these weak Gods. Humans never learn.
