Education in Japan is basically free. Primary and secondary education was already free. From last year (2019), pre-schooling for children of age between 3 and 5, is made free. From April-2020, higher/university education is planned to be made free. But, with coronavirus situation affecting the economy, we have to wait and see if it is going to be implemented.
