Samba carnival is celebrated in Tokyo, Japan in the last Saturday of August month. This is my 3rd or fourth experience, to watch Samba in Japan. This is the 38th Samba Carnival in Tokyo. Event is held in Asakusa near Kaminarimon gate in the public road. Take JR Asakusa station exit if you are planning to use train. Thousands of people come and watch Samba carnival and it seems the participation is improving every year. Events usually ends by 18:00.
Its a colorful event with a lot of energy on the performing side and spectators side. Energy levels of all parties will be tested by afternoon summer sun.
Programmes start from 13:00 with students from Samba and other schools performing a band parade.
After the children's parade, announcement of Samba Carnival is done by a small team. Then comes the small sized teams which takes part in competition. Samba dancers in small numbers comes with very colorful wings made of bird feather. Its a charming scene to see these beautiful ladies in colorful bird feathers.
Next comes bigger teams and each team sizes in the range of 50-100. These teams come with some theme based on which a group will be dressed and dancing to the beats of Samba. Team usually comes with a moving demonstrations of the theme and some dancers in that theme demonstrations. There will be band and singers also. Another attraction is the flag bearer and escort who may be those who are adorned most.
For me, Tokyo Samba Carnival is a visual treat of 2~3 hrs. Energy and communication that the dancers and other participants carry through out the event is amazing. Similarly, the audience also give an apt response which definitely is the fuel for participants.
So, whoever is planning to visit Japan in August, I would suggest not to miss this event.
