Onam is the most popular festival for Keralites/Malayalees. All Malayalee communities and families around the globe try to celebrate this festival wherever they are, in allegiance with fellow Malayalees.
Here in Japan also, we celebrate Onam at home and with colleagues.
Sadhya is a very important part of the celebrations. Sadhya is a grand feast prepared during Onam and other special occasions with more than 20 dishes; usually all vegetables. Sometimes, it may be difficult to arrange some vegetables like elephant foot yam in Japan. But recently many Indian grocery stores are arranging all required ingredients towards Onam season. Sadhya is served in banana leaves. In Japan we have to manage with paper replicas of banana leaves.
In Japan, apart from celebrations at home, celebrations are done with communities also. In our place, we reserve and borrow kitchen from city hall, gathers in the morning, cooks all dishes together and enjoy Sadhya together. Community gathering is an essential part of Onam celebrations.
After Sadhya, people involve in different cultural activities as well as sports events like Tug of war. All Malayalee communities across the globe tries to enjoy the celebrations to the fullest.
