Banana or Plantain trees are not a common sight in Japan. One day during my travel to nearby Utsunomiya city, I was surprised to see a large area with Banana/Plantain trees. This was near Yaita city, around 150 Kms, north to Tokyo, and on the sides of Route 4, national highway. Though, I tried to get more information from nearby convenient store no one had any idea about who cultivates those bananas. Just like me, Japanese people in the locality also used to wonder on these bananas.

I understand that these plantains are imported from Ecuador and you can buy raw, ripe and mix packages. When I buy 20 Kgs of mixed package, it costs around 435 JPY/Kgs. Biggest advantage for a foreigner is that you can place your order in English and even you can call communicate in English with this vendor. No need to worry about your Japanese skills.
