ജപ്പാനിലെ ഒബെന്തോ, ഒനിഗിരി, കൺവീനിയന്റ്‌ സ്റ്റോർ | Obento lunch, Onigiri, Convenient store in Japan

Please see this video to get a basic understanding on convenient stores in Japan, Obento (boxed lunch/boxed food) and Onigiri (rice balls).

Convenient stores are present all over Japan and leading chains are 7-Eleven, Lawson, Familymart etc. Convenient stores, as the name suggests, are convenient to access and back up our daily life with bare minimum consumables or products. These shops are generally open for 24 hrs. Suppose we miss to buy something important and super markets are closed. Get to the nearest convenience store and there you are. You can find convenience stores mostly on easily accessible locations. These shops use minimum space and stores maximum products. Generally products are priced a little higher than that in super markets.

Obento traditionally refers to boxed lunch and had some patters like usually it contained some rice, pickles, deep fried fish or meat etc. But nowadays this term is universally used to refer any boxed food; let it be lunch or dinner; breaks the traditional pattern of contents. Now a days obento may be a curry-rice packed in a box. Obento is available in convenient stores, super markets etc and there are obento shops which sells a wide variety of Obento, especially in and around Railway stations, Offices, Factories etc. Typically Obento prices ranges from 400 JPY to less than 2,000 JPY.

Onigiri traditionally refers to rice balls shaped in triangles and wrapped in sea weeds. Nowadays a wide variety of Onigiri have evolved which contains meat, fish, bacon, curry with or with out sea weed wrapping. Onigiri is a great convenience for people moving around with busy schedules. A quick and healthy food. Onigiri prices range from 100 to less than 500 JPY.

I took "Spicy twice cooked pork curry" from 7-eleven which is not that spicy; a little sour and a little sweet. Soy sauce taste seems to be in front.
