Sports day is celebrated in Japanese Kindergartens, towards the end of summer. Rehearsals and practice sessions starts 3-4 weeks before the event day.
On the event day, along with children, whole family gathers to support the children. Its like a special day of celebration for the children.
Programme started by headmistress addressing the gathering, followed by the declaration of the day by a team of children.
Before getting into the activities, children warm up by moving their body based on a music and as directed by their teachers.
Then, competitions starts among the children groups. All children participate in competitions. Rather than winning the competition, all children are encouraged to complete the event, even if it takes all others to wait for the last one to finish the activity.
Apart from children, games and activities are arranged for all visiting family members and relatives to ensure their participation.
During the lunch break, families sit together and have lunch which is brought from home. Just a like a family get together in Kindergarten. Some people even share their food with other families. I believe, for children, this is a great experience and a good memory.
After the lunch break, final event is conducted, generally a demonstration of team work, helping each other etc. Many good messages for a happy social life are conveyed through out the events and activities of the day.
Finally, the day is concluded with a thanks note and a concluding message by headmistress and a formal farewell greeting by a group of children.
